When Should You Replace Your Kitchen Countertops?
What can we say? Life happens! When it comes to your countertops, life circumstances like a growing family may mean you’re due for an upgrade or an excess of accidents could result in a little more damage than can be buffed out. No matter the case, if countertops are a major eyesore in your kitchen, you may want to know if it’s time to replace your stone altogether. Here are a few things to look for!
Cracking
Under extreme heat or pressure, some hard stone countertops can actually crack, creating both an unsightly blemish and a sanitary hazard for your home. Obviously, having a large crack running down your kitchen countertop is not an ideal look. On top of that, cracks in your stone create hard-to-reach areas where bacteria can accumulate and contaminate any food that you work within that area in the future. If you have a similar situation on your hands, it may be time to throw in the towel.
Burn Spots
We always recommend placing a heat-resistant pad of some sort on your countertop when you are working with hot kitchenware. However, when you’re busy making seven dishes before your in-laws arrive for dinner, it’s easy to forget about that piping-hot casserole you left sitting on the counter. Extreme heat can cause nasty burn spots on your counter and, if it’s noticeable enough, can warrant replacing your countertops altogether.
Stubborn Stains
While we have discussed how to prevent countertop accidents, sometimes life whisks us away, and we forget to clean up that spill in a timely manner. In some cases, certain stains can turn out to be irreversible due to improper sealing of your stone or if left to sit for an extended amount of time. There are more heavy-duty ways to go after stubborn stains, but if the stain in question is too tough to remove, you may want to consider changing out your countertops or, at least, that section of the stone.
Outdated Appearance
Sometimes, despite what your mother told you in middle school, looks do matter. Maybe you’ve just moved into a new home with an outdated kitchen. Maybe you’ve been in your space for a while, and it simply needs a fresh look. Either way, when your kitchen needs a makeover, countertops are a great place to look when you’re trying to revitalize your aesthetic. Replacing the countertop material in your kitchen can single-handedly transform your space into a place where you’re finally excited to have your friends over for dinner.
Selling Your Home
If you’re thinking of selling your home, countertops are one of the best investments you can make to increase its resale value. Who doesn’t love to see “brand new countertops” on a home listing? Talk about move-in ready! We definitely recommend weighing the pros and cons of sprucing up your kitchen counters before your place hits the market!
